First casualty of war

Re. post ‘Bird’s Eye View of the Middle East’. There is no doubt that the first casualties of conflict are the animals – think ‘War Horse’. I remember in the mid-Eighties flying in to Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama’s HQ camp in Gorongoza, Mocambique. His whole army was spread out tactically over a wide area (because of bombing raids by Samora Machel’s East German pilots.) The whole army was living off the wildlife and the sound of shots was heard day and night. This game reserve, described as Africa’s best, was being systematically decimated: what is left I do not know, and it would be too heart-breaking to find out.
